Exam style magazine question
LO-to write and structure an effective exam style question
The two covers represent gender very differently.Cosmopolitan represents Tom Daley in an anti-stereotypical way.For example he has been dressed in more feminine clothing both in colour and style (for example the pink trousers and the yellow top.).However as a gay man this is more stereotypical. On the other hand ,there are more stereotypically masculine representations with the tattoo and the muscular physique.
The two covers represent gender very differently.GQ represents Rhianna in an anti-stereotypical way.For example in the cover she is styled to represent medusa with her eyes and hair, she also has a snake across her body which doesn't stereotypically display feminism and can be shown to be quite negative. They also show off her tattoo which is stereotypically a male attribute. The magazine uses stereotypical male topics on the cover line which is not what you would expect if the main image was a women.
The representation of gender is similar because they are both represented as anti-stereotypical for their gender by the colours and clothes they are styled in.They are both put on magazines aimed at the other gender for example they put Rhianna on the front of a male magazine cover and Tom Daley on a magazine cover represented for women.
The gender representation is different because even though on GQ Rhianna is represented anti-stereotypically she is still represented as a powerful beautiful strong women whereas Tom Daley is not represented at all as masculine and is shown to look stereotypically more feminine as a pose to masculine.

HOMEWORK
In this cover Bella Hadid has been represented as a stereotypical female wearing very bold neutral colours like black and deep red. Typically GQ is a magazine aimed for males so to see a female on it shows maybe she is used purely for male enticement. The cover lines on this cover talk about modeling and fashion which for GQ isn’t how they usually present their magazine. The way Bella Hadid has been styled suggests that she could possibly be used to grab the males attention in a short black dress with very bold makeup and her pose as well.In conclusion I think Bella has been represent as a stereotypical female to grab male attention and make a statement on the magazine cover.
What do you think about the fact that they have 'Men of the year' versus 'model of the year'? What is that suggesting about women?

Raheem Sterling- MBE is an English professional football player who plays as a winger and attacking midfielder for premier league club for Manchester city and the England national team.Born in Jamaica to Jamaican parents Sterling moved to London at the age of five.Sterling was the 5th youngest player to represent England when he played against Sweden in 2012.In 2016 sterling was the nations most expensive player when he was bought by Manchester city
In December 2018 whilst playing against Chelsea sterling was subjected to racist taunts from Chelsea fans. Sterling believes that these comm
ents came from online.
Sterling's experience with racism as a young black footballer came to ahead during a match with Chelsea in 2018 after going to fetch the ball and having racial slurs said at him from Chelsea fans.Sterling spoke up about this issue saying he's not normally one to speak up but he wanted his point to be heard.Funnily enough later on he ended up playing for Chelsea and still does now.

.layout and design
The GQ magazine front cover of Raheem Sterling (RS) is being shown to represent the fight against racism and standing up to it.The wings he wears in the main image represent that he is a guardian angle for those who have been subjected to racism and could also represent he plays as a winger and him being a famous black role model it is important that he talk about issues like these that happen. They also make him a black angle which stereotypically angles are white which shows the fight to racism. He is very confident in showing off his tattoo's even though earlier that year he got hate for them in the media for having a gun on his right leg representing his dead dad who died from gun crime. The audienceis appealed because it shows that even big stars like him face problems with racism and stand up to it.
The gold cover lines on the front cover have connotations of leadership and power as gold is a wealthy and strong colour. The colour palette of the front cover use quite dull tones such as black and grey so that when you look at the cover the focus is on the main image not whats although the colours could represent power in the standup to racism.
In the photo on the front cover Sterling is wearing no top which could show his strength not only physically but mentally to even after going through the hate crimes that happened. The shot of the photo is taken from a low angle shot to show power and that he's above everyone.RS is doing a stereotypical male pose to show of him being a man and showing off specifically to the women.

.Vouge is aimed at ABC1 fashion and style concious women who are educated sophisticaed and wealthy
.Whilst it traditionaly targeted an older female audience of 30-45 year olds you could say that this audience has now broadened to appeal to inspire and empower younger readers to as well as a much more culturally diverse audience under the infuence of the new editor
.Historically in magazines like vouge anyone other than white like black and asian was underrepresented until around 2017
The harry styles magazine is represented as antistereotypically because vouge is a womens fashion magazine and also he is wearing a dress which is not stereotypically masculine.Vouge put rhianna who is a black/mixed woman which for vouge is different because they normally dont put coloured people on there covers and dont represent race. Both these covers represent how vouge has changed because they used to only have white females but now they are using men and people of colour.

In the details magazine gender is represented as males having power. The man is led between the women’s legs a looks quite powerful. The women also has a deep red nail polish on which the colour red can have connotations as being a stereotypical sexy colour. The women could be there for the male purpose only to entice him. This cover could represent men being more powerful and have more control over women.
In the GQ magazine gender is represented again as men being powerful just in a different way to how details represented it. Sterling has been made to look strong by making him topless and show off his muscles. The angle the picture is taken from makes him look big and he has more power.
Both magazines represent men being powerful but just in two completely different ways.

LO-to practise comparing representations in two covers
Similaritys:
-both represent women in powerful ways
-anchorage talks about empowring the women
-cover lines talk about fashion and beauty
-mix of male and female topics on cover lines
Differences:
-On the elle cover they use a longshot to focus on her body and make her look more empowered and confident
-Malalas cover uses a headshot to portray she is approachable and friendly
-Colour palletes are different malalas red shows power and strength but kims colours show femininty and look vvery bold
-Kim is a stereotypical women to find on a magazine cover but you wouldnt typically find malla on a cover like that
-They use malala to make a point and show feminism and standing up but Kim is there to look hot and show of her body etc
The two magazine covers are represented very differently. They both present gender with a feminist slant.
Both covers are shown to represent gender in empowering ways. This can be shown in the anchorage text when they use words like "Confidence issue a smart woman's guide to self belief" and "the extraordinary life on Malala survivor activist and legend".This stands out to the reader and shows on both magazines that the women o n these covers and confident and strong. The anchorage is placed center to the image on the covers to draw attention. This is very antistereotypical as women are typically seen as shy and weak , these covers show that women can be empowered and strong to.
In both covers gender is represented as feminism. On the ELLE magazine on one of the main cover lines that says "KIM' they use a hot pink to not only make it stand out but also show the feminine side of the cover as pink is a stereotypical 'girl' colour, they also talk about a mix of male and female topics like"fashion' but also famous male actors like 'Eddie Redmayne' and 'careers'.On the VOUGE cover the cover lines talk about both male and female topics again such as "beauty' and 'pleated skirts' but also 'fighting talk' and dating'. Both cover use a mix of masculine and feminine topics to create contrast and still display masculine attributes on a female fashion magazine.
On the other hand in the ELLE magazine they use a long shot to make her look empowered and confident it also shows of her body and make her look hot and make her look attrative. In the VOUGE cover Malala cover they use a head shot to focus on her face and make her look approachable and kind,t hey also do this because they want the viewer to focus on her face and not her body as they want to convey a strong message about standing up.They both show feminism in very different way the ELLE magazine shows feminism to be stereotypical and about beauty,The VOUGE cover represents feminism as being powerful and strong.
In the ELLE magazine cover they use Kim Kardashian who is the stereotypical women you would find on a cover she is conveyed to look sexy and be there to be there for male purpose. In the VOUGE magazine cover Malala is the anti stereotypical women to be found in a high end fashion magazine she has been put there to put a message across not to look pretty and fake. This contrasts the beauty standards of fashion magazines as they are becoming more inclusive and not just using hot models to show of now they are using people to show strong messages as well as to look good.
In conclusion to this i think these magazines represent gender in very different ways, the elle magazine juxtaposes the vouge magazine in the sense that inclusivity is becoming a big factor in fashion magazines these days.
